Join COMBINE Australia and the Centre for Applied Bioinformatics for a whirlwind introduction to metagenomics. The two-day workshop is designed with end-users in mind – people who want to leverage the power of next-generation sequencing but are unsure exactly where to start.
In the workshop, we will walk through the steps of DNA sequence analysis, from quality control and quality assurance through DNA assembly to gene and protein identification and annotation. We will also analyse metagenomics DNA sequences, using hands-on experience to analyse random community metagenomics.
The workshop is taught through a combination of lectures highlighting and discussing the key topics, followed by hands-on practical experience analysing DNA. No prior experience with programming is required. The course will include an introduction to Linux terminal use.
🗓️ Date: Monday 11th November – Tuesday 12th November, 9:00am – 5:00pm
📍 Location: Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, Kensington, Perth, WA
Schedule:
🌟 Introductions: The day will begin with an introduction to metagenomics, Linux and bash, and setting up our laptops for subsequent metagenomics analysis.
🤝 Lectures: Prof. Rob Edwards will be taking us through key steps in metagenomics analysis with tools and software used in standard practice and also those developed by Prof. Edwards and his group
🔬 Hands-on experience: Participants will have valuable experience performing their own metagenomics sequence analysis on viral sequences and also visualising the analysed data.
🍔 Morning Tea and Lunch: Don’t worry about going hungry! We’ve got you covered with morning tea and a light lunch to keep your energy levels high throughout the day.
💰 Registration:
To ensure a focused and productive event, the number of attendees is limited to 35. Secure your spot by registering today! A small registration fee of $10 is required for COMBINE members and $20 for non-members.

At the end of the event, you will be able to:
- Identify the appropriate software for the analysis of metagenomics sequencing projects.
- Start from a simple DNA sequence file, analyse the sequences, and generate meaningful conclusions.
- Analyse random community metagenomic sequences to identify which organisms are present in the sample and what they are doing.
- Network with like-minded peers and mentors.
When:
- Monday 11th November – Tuesday 12th November, 9:00am – 5:00pm
Where:
- Pawsey Supercomputing Research Centre, Kensington, Perth, WA
Cost:
- $10 for COMBINE members
- $20 for non-members
