The Australian Computational Biology and Bioinformatics Student Society (COMBINE) is putting out a call out for volunteers to join the 2021 COMBINE Symposium Organising Committee!
The symposium is our premier event for the year, held in conjunction with the Australian Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Society (ABACBS) conference, and provides an opportunity for bioinformatics research students from across Australia to present their work. This year’s symposium will be held virtually on the 22nd of November and will be hosted by the University of Tasmania. However, one of the major benefits of attending any conference is to network and the best way to network is to meet in person. Therefore, we will also organise two satellite sites in Melbourne and Sydney. These satellite sites will essentially be mini-conferences which will be virtually linked to the other satellite sites and to the virtual conference. The chance to be involved in organising a national event is a rare opportunity, an excellent learning experience, and should be a lot of fun!
We are looking for people to fill the following roles as part of the 2021 COMBINE symposium committee:
Treasurer and finance team – In charge of finances for the virtual conference and satellite sites. In addition, the finance team is in charge of identifying symposium sponsors. Finance members are required to work closely with the COMBINE treasurer and ABACBS to organise funding for the event.
Media and comms team – Responsible for promoting the symposium and the careers panel events through social media, via the COMBINE mailing list, and by other possible avenues. Members are expected to work in conjunction with the COMBINE media team and the symposium coordinators.
Satellite-site chairs – Responsible for organising and managing the satellite site events in Melbourne and Sydney.
General committee members – Contribute to discussion and planning for the symposium and help out as required. There will also be opportunities for general committee members to be involved in the symposium program committee which will select the abstracts to be presented at the symposium.
Careers panel team – Bring together a panel of computational biologists from a variety of fields and career paths to give advice and guidance to students. This is a great opportunity to develop your bioinformatics network!
If you are interested in being on the committee, or just want to hear more about what it involves, please fill out this form and we will be in contact soon!
