Bioinformatics Research Officer, South Australian Health & Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), Adelaide
Purpose of the Position
The South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI) in Adelaide, Australia is now seeking applications for a bioinformatics/computational biology researcher to work on collaborative projects between the SAHMRI Infection and Immunity Theme and the Cancer Theme. Prior experience in at least some of the following areas is essential: analysis of next generation sequencing (NGS) data; network and pathway biology; cancer systems biology; machine learning methods and experience in biomarker discovery and validation. The successful candidate will work as part of a team that includes both computational biologists and wet-lab scientists investigating the immune system and cancer from a systems biology perspective. Active collaboration and the ability to manage multiple difference projects simultaneously is essential. An initial 2 year full-time contract is available, potentially renewable.
SAHMRI: is a new $250 million state-of-the-art medical research facility with excellent core facilities and services, including a high-performance computing cluster. SAHMRI is located in the new $3 billion biomedical precinct in the Adelaide central business district, close to all the amenities of the city. Adelaide boasts a Mediterranean climate, beautiful beaches and is within an hour’s drive of world-class wine regions including the Barossa Valley.
Implement and develop efficient pipelines for the analysis of a wide range of NGS based data and where necessary develop new custom bioinformatics methods and/or pipelines.
Implement machine learning based approaches to identify novel biomarkers of disease based on NGS data.
Provide collaborative support to others in the group/theme with bioinformatics components of their projects.
Lead or assist with drafting publications relating to the projects.
Assist in the smooth running of projects and the wider group (e.g. some light sys admin work).
Contribute to development of competitive funding applications.
MSc or PhD in Bioinformatics, Computer Science, Physics, Statistics or other relevant discipline.
Essential Experience, Knowledge and Skills
A strong track record in bioinformatics as evidenced by prior publications in high impact journals in the field.
Advanced programming skills in several of the following: Python, R, C++, Perl, SQL, Java.
Prior experience working in genomics/NGS bioinformatics
Demonstrated experience in the downstream integrative analysis of omics data (e.g. pathway, network analyses).
Prior experience working in a high performance computing environment.
Demonstrated problem solving and communication skills.
Must be highly collaborative, be a strong team player and be able to manage multiple ongoing projects.
