We are excited to announce that the 2016 Graeme Clark Oration will be delivered by one of the world’s foremost authorities on the subject, Dr Thomas R. Insel. Dr Insel is Director of Clinical Neuroscience at Verily (formerly Google) Life Sciences. From 202 until November 2015, Dr Insel was the Director of the National Institute for Mental Health (US), the US$1.5 Billion component of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) committed to research on mental disorders.
Mental health is a major public health issue in Australia, with growing social and economic cost. It is reported that almost half of Australia’s population will experience a mental health disorder at some point in their lifetime and 20 per cent of Australians are likely to suffer a mental illness in any one year. Up to 15 per cent of people seriously affected by mental illness eventually die by suicide. Can there be a more pressing health issue for the Australian community?
“Dr Thomas Insel has been one of the most influential leaders in global mental health as Director of the National Institute for Mental Health for over a decade. He is a visionary who is now working to explore exciting new opportunities that the internet and new technologies offer mental health care”, said Professor Pat McGorry AO, Australian of the Year and leading mental health expert.
Laureate Professor Emeritus Graeme Clark welcomed the announcement that Dr Insel will deliver this year’s Oration. “One of the remaining great frontiers in Medical Science is the treatment of mental disorders. Dr Thomas Insel, the 2016 Graeme Clark Orator, has outstanding credentials in this field, and his oration promises to provide deep insights that will lead to ground breaking research and commercial development”, he said.
The Graeme Clark Oration is a free public event, but registration is essential. Please visit the Graeme Clark Oration website to learn more about Dr Insel and how to register for the free pubic science event of the year.
